About the Easy to Read Materials

The easy to read materials on this site adhere to the Guidelines for Minimizing the Complexity of Text. These guidelines are intended to address the need for individuals who read and/or listen with understanding below a third-grade level to have equitable access to information. In this case, the goal was to maximize access to essential information related to COVID-19. Adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities are the primary audience, but many other individuals, with and without disabilities, may benefit from these materials. A scoping review of the literature, expert review, and user testing contributed to the development and refinement of the Guidelines for Minimizing the Complexity of Text. Among other things, the guidelines call for the intentional use of repetition, large font, increased spacing, and no images. More information about these and other features can be accessed in the current version of the Guidelines for Minimizing the Complexity of Text.
